Miami has evolved into one of the great international cities in the United States, with a strong Caribbean and Latin American flavor infusing its growing role as a commercial and entertainment mecca. From the glitz and glamour of South Beach to its soaring causeways, glittering skyline, tourist attractions, and beautiful beaches, Miami will beguile any visitor.
AHPBA's host hotel, the Eden Roc, has been completely renovated to recapture the glory of its birth in Miami's classic era of the 1950s and '60s. One of Miami Beach's true landmark hotels, the Eden Roc was designed in 1955 by Russian-born architect Morris Lapidus, who made his mark as a revolutionary retail designer in the 1930s and 1940s. He also designed the nearby Fontainebleu (1954) and Sheraton Bal Harbour (1956) in a frenzy of creativity, creating the first true resort hotels in which people could enjoy not only in-house restaurants and bars, but clothing stores, hair salons and novelty shops. His swank hotels featured fanciful, outlandish decorations and interior design. He adopted an exotic, Italianate design for the Eden Roc, featuring a gondola-shaped outdoor fountain in which floated a Winged Victory of Samothrace. His use of light, color and whimsy to create dramatic and lively spaces appealed to the common person. Created to define opulence in an era that celebrated prosperity, Eden Roc has come to embody the city's unique architectural heritage.
Miami Beach first became a city of glamour in the 1940s and '50s, when Hollywood stars came to play and today's celebrities still come to Miami Beach in vast numbers. It's no accident that an international basketball star decided to join the Miami Heat this year, mentioning "South Beach" explicitly. Lincoln Road became and remains, the city's center for shopping, outdoor dining and exploring. South Beach (the area between 1st and 25th Streets) has, in the last 15 years, transformed from a site of urban blight to one of the wildest entertainment venues in the nation. The world-class Miami Zoo, modeled on the San Diego Zoo; Vizcaya, a virtual castle built in the 1920s by a northern industrialist; the Guzman Art Center; the tourist arcade at Bayside and the Cuban section of downtown around "Calle Ocho" all offer the visitor many places to explore. World-class fishing, golf, and tennis are also available, if you want it.
